Andy & Margaret Engwirda

OCC Barton Cup - 1997

(s/v/ Bolero) for their two-stop circumnavigation from Australia rounding all five southernmost Capes aboard their home-built 56ft wooden ketch BOLERO. During the voyage they covered 17,100 miles in 134 days on the first leg via Cape Horn and 16,000 miles in 109 days (averaging 146 miles per day ) on the return via Cape of Good Hope. Their worst storm was encountered near Amsterdam Island in the Southern Ocean when winds reached 70 knots. They followed the Clipper Route which took them near Brazil and Argentina in the South Atlantic. Andy was very keen to follow the track of Sir Francis Chichester, who circumnavigated stopping once in Sydney. Their account of the voyage, ‘Around the Five Southern Capes’ appeared in two parts in FF 1997/2 and 1998/1. They received the 1997 Australian Trophy for the same voyage.
