Although Mary's sailing could hardly be described as cruising, her standard of seamanship was such that she became the fastest woman to cross the North Atlantic singlehanded and was second in class in the 1992 OSTAR. It was recognised that despite her achievements being in the field of ocean racing, they had much relevance to the development of boats and gear for ocean cruising. Mary contributed an article to Flying Fish 2007/2, which also features her yacht QII on the cover.
