Richard & Diana Steel
OCC Award - 1990
for their low-key, unremarkable manner of cruising which epitomises OCC values. Richard had cruised in his 45ft ketch for many years before meeting Diana, and by 1990 had made nine Atlantic crossings to her seven. Their daughter Joanna was born in Gibraltar in 1981 and by the age of nine had already made five crossings. The style of their cruising was generally a brief period of activity followed by lengthy stays in their favourite places – Grenada, Martinique, Venezuela, Vigo, Gibraltar and Gran Canaria – and it was reckoned that GUB-GUB (named after the pig in Dr Doolittle in deference to her sailing qualities) must have logged some 100,000 over the years.
