Adrian Flanagan

The OCC Award of Merit - 2008

Awarded to non-member Adrian Flanagan (Barrabas) for the first solo vertical circumnavigation of the Earth, aboard his unusual French-built stainless steel 40 footer.

The voyage lasted two years and took him from the UK across the Atlantic and down the coast of Brazil – where he was forced to evade pirates – to pass Cape Horn from east to west. He then headed across the Pacific towards Japan and northwards to the Aleutians. After passing through the Bering Strait he turned west for the Northeast Passage around the north coast of Russia to Norway, and then back to the UK.

A review of Over the Top, Adrian’s highly readable account of his voyage, appears on page 108 of Flying Fish 2009/1
