Frank Mulville

OCC Barton Cup - 1989

Unfortunately there is no report in FF 1990/1 (at that time edited by David Wallis) of the stories behind the 1989 Awards. Frank died in 1997 at the age of 75, following 20 years of OCC membership (a detailed and interesting obituary appeared in FF 1998/1). The author of numerous sailing stories, he married three times and covered hundreds of thousands of miles in the North and South Atlantic in a succession of yachts including a converted lifeboat, a converted Cornish fishing smack called GIRL STELLA which was wrecked in the Azores, and ISKRA, a traditional 30ft wooden cutter built in 1930. It is very possible that the award was made for ‘lifetime achievement’ rather than a specific voyage.
