Victor Langerwerf Receives Special OCC Award

When yachts were turned away from safe haven in Curaçao, OCC Port Officer Representative Victor Langerwerf intervened on their behalf.

Dear Fellow OCC Members,

The OCC Board and General Committee (GC) were observing the actions of Victor Langerwerf, our POR for Curaçao in the Dutch Lesser Antilles. One of our own yachts and eight other yachts were denied entry into Curaçao due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The authorities in Curaçao tried to ward off S/Y Escape West but Victor was having none of it and pressured the Curaçao authorities until they allowed S/Y Escape West into Curacao for 48 hours on the 23rd March 2020. Today, 24th March 2020, we learned that S/Y Escape West may stay longer in Curaçao.

The OCC Board and GC, as well as many of us, were following both Victor’s posts and those of S/Y Escape West on the OCC Members’ Group Facebook page. Other sources of information came in as well from other yachts that Victor assisted.

The OCC GC decided that Victor’s services to the OCC were above and beyond those expected of a Port Officer and hence have decreed the OCC Special Award upon Victor Langerwerf.

Eoin Robson.
Chair, OCC Awards Committee.
Stavanger, 24th March 2020.
