OCC RoRC Report from Tahiti, French Polynesia

We returned to GLIDE in French Polynesia just in time to meet many boats and OCC members completing their South Pacific passages.

We returned to GLIDE in Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marqueses, French Polynesia in April, just in time to meet many boats completing their South Pacific passages from Panama and Mexico. Among those we met was Håvard Johnset onboard MilleMomenti with Lyla and son, Julian. Håvard immediately applied for OCC membership, and we were delighted to welcome them and watch them hoist our extra OCC burgee! Sharing our anchorage in Atuona were Andrew & Julia Dallas on Hullaballou (whom we had met last summer in Maine) and Martin Hollenhorst & family on Cheglia.

From Hiva Oa, we sailed to nearby Hapatoni, Tahuata where we first met Lisa Paton & Mark Norman on En Passant. We later spent several days together in Taiohoe, Nuku Hiva where we rented a car one day for a fun and interesting adventure, touring the island. We also spent a nice afternoon with Charles Wilding on Wilderness who came to visit upon seeing the Flying Fish.

We next sailed to Ua Pou where we were joined in the anchorage by Derek Bretherton & Lesley Bennett on Ocean Blue. They joined us on Glide for cocktails and in the process helped us sort out a battery wiring issue. After Ua Pou, we sailed to Ua Huka and were the only boat in the narrow anchorage of Vaipaee, so no OCC sightings there! After Ua Huka we sailed back to Nuku Hiva for provisioning and a brief rendezvous with En Passant before heading to the Tuamotu Archipelago. As we passed by Ua Pou on our way, we talked with Ocean Blue on the VHF and learned that they too were heading to Tuamotus the following morning. In the Tuamotu atoll of Makemo, we shared an anchorage with Peter Auf der Maur on SailMore and Merrill Mant & Maryse Tetrault on Ambition.

After exploring several more atolls in the Tuamotu Archipelago, we sailed to Tahiti. While anchored in Port Phaeton, we visited Holly Scott & Jo Russell (and their 3 adopted kittens) on Hula. We left Glide in the marina there for a 6-week trip back to the US.

When we return in mid-July we will explore Tahiti and the other Society Islands as well as the western atolls in the Tuamotus. We’ll then head to the Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga before storing the boat to go back to the US to wait out the South Pacific cyclone season. If you are cruising in this region, send us an email and let us know where you are and where you are heading: glide@myiridium.net. We look forward to many more OCC encounters along the way!
