Roving Rear Commodore Report - Great Britain April 2019

Toodle-oo! reporting in from Whitehaven in the UK during Brexit time and preparing to lead the Celtic Cruise to Islay in Scotland coming up in May...

By Bill & Laurie Balme - 02/04/2019

Toodle-oo! remains in Whitehaven in northern UK getting some much-needed TLC – including new bottom protection – Coppercoat and a full service of the mast which had to come down to fit us into a shed for that application.
While parked in the shed, we were lucky to have arranged to look after someone’s beautiful farmhouse in Cumbria while they toured New Zealand. We utilized the website trustedhousesitters.com to find the opportunity – which may be a useful tactic for other full time OCC cruisers looking for some land time. We managed to get a great walk in with Chris and Fi Jones (along with grandkids Theo and Owen) and Phil and Norma Heaton up Blencathra via Sharp Edge – quite the hike!

Laurie has just returned to the UK having had to head back to the US to allow us enough time in the UK to actually finish the OCC’s Celtic Cruise. The whole visa prospect is a real pain and is set to get even more complex following Brexit!

We expect to leave Whitehaven shortly after Easter and will slowly make our way to Caernarfon for the start of the OCC Celtic Cruise which will take us up to Islay for the beginning of June. From there we’ll head to the Outer Hebrides and then go direct (if winds allow) to Norway’s Lofoten Islands in time for the summer solstice.

We’re getting anxious to get sailing again and hoping to see plenty of OCC burgees along the way…
