RoRC Report from Scandinavia

In this hemisphere January is a quiet time for sailing, but active for planning.

Personally, having finished teaching responsibilities in the Middle East, I will have from May until September sailing in Scandinavia and sincerely hope to meet as many OCC members as possible.

Firstly, I would like to welcome Hans Hansell a new colleague Roving Regional RC. I am very much looking forward to a “summit” next summer somewhere in the Stockholm area with him and Ernest Godshalk, our other RoRC, promising some Irish hospitality to them and other members real and potential. I am also particularly looking forward to meeting David Blackburn (OCC) who will be cruising that area. We have often been in contact and it is about time that paths crossed.

“Pilgrim Soul” is a sociable yacht, overloaded with glasses and cooking implements, well prepared for entertaining, this important side of cruising. I much enjoy the chat over a good meal aboard with like minded company. May I recommend stocking up with alcohol in Germany, Estonia or Denmark, and remember that Bornholm Island, with its good supermarkets, is Danish. Prices of alcohol elsewhere are exorbitant and, even worse, stocks can only be bought in the few and far between state owned outlets. Some shops on islands will order, but delivery can take days. I well remember being storm-bound on Santio island in Finland close to the Russian frontier. “Have you any alcohol” was the cry from the few Finns who were sheltering. When we discovered aboard a long forgotten case of red wine bought months previously in Tallinn, they were ecstatic and drank us dry. I suppose one can equate a significant local thirst with their prices.

This year we plan to sail east from our base in Kungsviken on the Swedish West Coast to the Stockholm archipelago and from there to the Finnish west and south coasts. All together it has to be one of the world’s most attractive cruising areas. I favour anchoring, but the facilities are excellent in the many harbours and marinas. If there are any members planning to be in the area, please make a welcome contact.
