RoRC Report from New Zealand

On 15 October at 2pm 'Caramor' sailed out of Tongatapu, destination Opua, New Zealand.

Two minutes behind us were Fatty Goodlander and Carolyn on Ganesh. We’d only just met and our synchronised departure was complete chance. The first two days were rough but we made excellent mileage, then the wind moderated and we enjoyed fantastic sailing. The whole time Ganesh and Caramor were about 10 miles apart and Fatty kept us entertained over the radio! Weather gurus were adamant we’d chosen the best window, and so were we until the wind died with not a breath forecast for days. It took 36 hours of motoring to get in. The customs and quarantine officers were pleasant, they took fresh food and anything that could germinate and inspected the hull.

After Opua, we headed for Whangarei where we made friends with Mary and David, the Port Officers. As there was no room on the hard, we bought a van and fitted it out, we have now been touring South Island for the past two months.

Back to Caramor next week, to give her all the TLC she deserves.
