Paul and Lynn Furniss, Regional Rear Commodores SE Australia, report on doings in the Sydney environs

By Paul & Lynn Furniss - 09/11/2018

Spring has all but arrived, with the weather slowly shifting towards warmer days, and with daylight savings the twilight racing sees many boats out on the harbour from the clubs on the waterways. We also hope to see yachts arriving for the festive season in due course over the coming months.

The quarterly Sydney event was well attended by both visitors and local members returning from their cruising activities. USA family crew of s/v Bear attended making it a truly international affair.

This is not particularly news from a cruising perspective but the inaugural SailGP event will occur in Sydney next February. The words from the website are as follows:

"Sydney Harbour is one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world and an iconic backdrop for the inaugural SailGP event. SailGP will showcase the best Sydney Harbour has to offer, with a range of options for spectators to see the magnificent F50 catamarans and cheer them on in the heat of battle on the water. This event will showcase a form of sailing that will be sure to excite non-sailors/sailors/cruisers alike."

Plans for this years’ dinner are somewhat behind due to many other commitments that are taking priority, but I hope to put some actions together soon.

As Youth Sponsorship Co-ordinator, I was tasked with finding a new berth for a YSP recipient who was stranded in Darwin when the initial skipper’s plans had to change, and Cian Mulee, from Westport Ire, has joined experienced sailors in the process of a circumnavigation. The boat was scheduled to leave Cairns some time ago, heading for Africa. We have several other applicants awaiting connection with skippers willing and able to take on young crew participating in the OCC Youth Sponsorship Programme.
