RoRC Report from Pamela MacBrayne & Denis Moonan in Polynesia

From French Polynesia to Maine and back...

By Pamela MacBrayne & Denis Moonan - 17/07/2018

Four days after submitting our previous report from Galapagos, we set sail from Isla Santa Cruz on April 10, bound for French Polynesia, two days after Cathy and Ian Cook on Sea Cloud. We set sail in the company of then OCC applicants Lisa and Johan Persson on Rubicon who became members of OCC while underway! Our 3 boats were part of an email group coordinated by Price & Benny Powell on Panache who ultimately became OCC members after reaching FP. Price did an amazing job of plotting the reported positions each day for 20 boats who were heading to FP from Panama and Galapagos at approximately the same time. Receiving his M-Fleet position report, embellished with sea stories, was the highlight each day!

Glide made landfall in Fatu Hiva after 19 days underway, on April 29. Several days later, Roving Rear Commodores Franco Ferrero & Kath McNulty on Caramor arrived in Fatu Hiva having sailed 5,000+ miles from Chile!

From Fatu Hiva Glide sailed to Hiva Oa for several days and then to Tahuatu where we joined Sea Cloud & Rubicon once again. There, we were joined by Glynn Buckle & crew on Clementina. Jo & Ross Blackman on Sojourn II, whom we had met at the Pacific Puddle Jump in Panama, also joined OCC in April. They successfully completed their transit to FP about a month later than we so, unfortunately, we didn’t have an opportunity to reconnect. We hope to rendezvous when we ultimately get to New Zealand where they live.

Glide is happily resting on the hard in Hiva Oa at Maintenance Marquises Services where we hauled on May 21 so that we could return to Maine for several months. We had to be sure to get back in plenty of time for the 2018 Maine Rally & Cruise on August 12! We’re looking forward to joining OCC Regional Rear Commodores, Dick & Moira Bentzel and Cruise Coordinator Sid LeFavour in what promises to be another spectacular OCC gathering! We can’t wait to see many of our long-time friends and new OCC members in beautiful Camden, Maine!

We plan to return to Glide in late August and spend time cruising the Marquesas. Then we’ll be off to the Tuamotu atolls, then Tahiti and the other Society Islands. We’ll haul the boat, again, in Raietea during cyclone season, 12/1-3/31. Fortunately, cyclones are rare in French Polynesia. We plan to visit many of our OCC friends while we are “boatless” early next year and return to Glide in March 2019.
